The uncanny threshold is a concept derived from my personal experience of contemporary Australian architecture in the form of Lovett Bay House, the private home of architects Richard Leplastrier and Karen Lambert in New South Wales. This research argues that Lovett Bay House challenges Malpas’s view that the threshold is something that needs to be crossed, as a zone of transition, in order to be a threshold. At Lovett Bay House, the absence of a conventional door, and the effective removal of the front wall, shifts the concept of the threshold as space of transition from inside to outside or vice versa to the threshold as a zone of habitation — a space in which one dwells. Within the zone of habitation it is argued that everyday experiences are made extraordinary through the simultaneous and overlapping space of the extended entranceway; the inside and outside experienced as one, and, what I have termed, the uncanny threshold. It is the aim of this research to explore the physical entity and felt experience of the uncanny threshold through the pictorial space of painting. In the first instance, a genealogy of the threshold is developed, drawing on the sublime as a device in painting. Turner have been selected, each demonstrating a particular approach to the sublime and, hence, the threshold in painting.

Ecological impact of the dingo after its arrival in Mainland Australia The thylacine is likely to have become near-extinct in mainland Australia about 2, years ago, and possibly earlier in New Guinea. Doubts exist over the impact of the dingo since the two species would not have been in direct competition with one another as the dingo hunts primarily during the day , whereas it is thought that the thylacine hunted mostly at night.

In addition, the thylacine had a more powerful build, which would have given it an advantage in one-on-one encounters. The thylacine was also much less versatile in diet than the omnivorous dingo. The adoption of the dingo as a hunting companion by the indigenous peoples would have put the thylacine under increased pressure.

This is at least in part a matter of deliberate policy — concerns that high rise development might compromise the essential character of the city centre have led to strictly enforced building regulations that restrict the height of new structures in the city, so that most buildings in the CBD have fewer than five storeys.

Governance[ edit ] Launceston Town Hall A large portion of Launceston is contained within the City of Launceston local government area , although some outer suburbs are part of adjacent council districts: In , Janie Dickenson became the youngest female elected mayor in Australia. For federal elections, Launceston falls within the Division of Bass , with the sitting member being Ross Hart for the Australian Labor Party who won the seat in the election.

The state Lower House seat is also called the Division of Bass , and is one of the five electorates in the Tasmanian House of Assembly. Both federal and state seats share common boundaries. The three intersecting lines in the flag represent the city’s three rivers North Esk, South Esk and Tamar and the two rectangles in the lines represent tin ingots.

The strip across the top with the jagged edge is green to represent the city’s parks, gardens and surrounding countryside. Waratah flowers at the top symbolise all flowers and similar beauties of nature.

A study proposes that the arrival of the dingoes may have led to the extinctions of the Tasmanian devil, the thylacine, and the Tasmanian nativehen in mainland Australia because the dingo might have competed with the thylacine and devil in preying on the nativehen. However, the study also proposes that an increase in the human population that gathered pace around 4, years ago may have led to this.

Nonetheless, recent morphological examinations of dingo and thylacine skulls show that although the dingo had a weaker bite, its skull could resist greater stresses, allowing it to pull down larger prey than the thylacine. The thylacine was less versatile in its diet than the omnivorous dingo. The adoption of the dingo as a hunting companion by the indigenous peoples would have put the thylacine under increased pressure.

Crime and Punishment Jennifer Jerome The changing nature of crime and punishment in the nineteenth century profoundly shaped the establishment and development of Australia. As urban centres grew and industrialisation increased, changes in wealth distribution and social structures required new policing and legal institutions. Wars and political unrest had also left Britain with a military force and infrastructure unsure of its place in a time of peace. The Transportation Act had formalised transportation as a form of punishment, and by it was an integral part of British systems of punishment.

When the American colonies repudiated British rule in , other British colonies became places of convict transportation. Around , convicted men and women were punished by transportation to Australia. As a collection of penal colonies, the Australian continent was a ground for experimentation in the treatment of convicted criminals and the development and implementation of new systems of law. Which version of the convict story is told depends on the emphasis authors have placed on primary or secondary sources, quantitative or qualitative data.

These convicts, with their variety of skills, trades, and as a source of free labour, were essential in building the new colony. Officially a penal colony until , transportation to NSW continued until by which time about 80, English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish convicts had been transported there. A small number of convict exiles, granted conditional pardons on arrival in Australia, continued to arrive in NSW in the s, with the last convict ship arriving in Moreton Bay at that time still part of NSW in April
